MoVida

MoVida - Casual but with a hint of exclusivity

There are many elements about MoVida that make you go to the effort of booking 1 month in advance (and that's for a Tuesday). The arty farty cool Hosier Lane location. The art deco settings inside. The great reviews about the food. I must say, I was mostly drawn to trying out the tapa on offer but today we learned about the "Racion" (larger tapa!)

It's a Tuesday night and the boy and I jammed the brakes on work at 6pm to make our 6pm reservation. The place was quietly buzzing at such an early juncture for dinner - people from work, groups of young people, and mature couples.

Our one and half hour eating experience was pleasant enough, punctuated by short bites of conversation between the waiters and the diners on either sides of our table.

Like, at one point, the snobby bespectacled waiter told the table of 5 next to us that expanding to 7 would not be possible because people need to book 2 months in advance, thanks. Luckily for them, their friends got a guernsey when the manager pulled over a spare table.

Despite getting attitude, that other table had it right - spanish food is for sharing and having to limit ourselves to 4 x tapa and 3 x racion was a struggle.

Out of the tapa, we liked:
1. the croquette (mmm, cheese)
2. roasted lamb cutlet (so flavoursome)

As for the larger racion dishes, our tastebuds spun out of control for the "air cured" wagyu beef served with a poached egg. But our fave was the rabbit meatballs with prawns.

The desserts - creme caramel and a hot chocolate ganache - acquitted themselves well. Fresh out of the oven, chocolate goodness oozing out and perfect presentation - yes, I had the ganache - recommendable.

This restaurant is great for couples wanting a casual but memorable night out, but I reckon the food and atmosphere call for a booking for more than 4 people going for the banquet.

Liar Liar

When you find a good place that delivers quality food and service time after time, you just can’t stop going.  And this describes my relationship with Liar Liar.  Can I just say that I read about this place in the Epicure when it first opened while subsequently walking outside this place after hours and wondering what café it was that had just opened off Glenferrie Road…it took a tragically long time for me to put 2 and 2 together.  There’s been no turning back since.

This is the sister café to Apte in Alphington and has very similar reciprocal food items on it’s menu like the toasted banana bread with rhubarb and labne that I can’t stop ordering.  They also do quality soy chai lattes with real brewed chai tea and spices.

The interior is modern and funky with stained timber tables and cute wooden stools.  I’m short so the footrests are a perfect height for me to rest my feet on and still fit under the tables!

All that timber means it can get pretty noisy inside when it’s busy and the exhaust system isn’t the greatest so your clothes can carry some of the café with you after you’ve left.  There isn’t as big a selection of sweets or cakes on offer as at Apte nor any muffins, which always makes me a bit sad when I go to a place that is otherwise so great but the raspberry and passionfruit friand I tried was excellent and the sweetness goes very well with their high quality coffees.

I read that this place has been sold to a doctor who will keep the same staff – what will this mean for my special Liar Liar? Watch this space…

Why I eat here:

Food: excellent all-rounder though I just can’t get past the toasted banana and coconut bread

Atmosphere: cool and chilled so you could linger on all day long with your laptop and a coffee in one of the little corners

Service: staff are very good and very attentive even when it’s functioning at peak hour traffic

Seating: communal and smaller tables, I have seen separate couples have to share the one table when crowds swell – be prepared!

Pricing: expect more inner eastern suburb pricing I suppose u could say! Still reasonable for the quality though

Chai lattes: of course and one of the best
